Last summer for my vacation I went to Chicago. I rode a train from Montreal to Schenectady, New York. Then I rode another train from Schenectady to Chicago. I checked in to the hotel where I was staying and wandered around looking for people to meet who were everywhere but I was still too shy. I tried to find Meno and Ms. Chica when I discovered their bags in the hotel room but I could not find them. We finally met up later in the evening.
I at once took to Meno. She is a very kind person and acts just like she writes. She has a quick and sharp wit, but the most understanding heart. And she's a recluse and pragmatist like me too. Which made conversation quite fun and always lively. I have not felt so at ease around people in a long ass time. And I laughed so much, it was good for me.
Ms. Chica surprised me with her lilting southern accent but most of all I loved hearing her voice as she shared her insightful wisdom that we have come to know and love at her blog. Patches may be a smart-ass but Ms. Chica is artistic, intelligent, and of course snarky to boot. I really appreciated her grand capacity for empathy. Its a gift.
I went to a few conference sessions. I did not feel that I fit in mainly because there was a lot of focus on growing readership and marketing in order to make money off your blog. Not that I wouldn't one day consider it, but it's just not my goal right now. There was one particularly disappointing session due to its lack of teaching and basically becoming a floor for self-praise from individual attendees and the overall message of aren't we all beautiful in our own way? It was just a little too much. But in all, I'm sure the conference held great appeal for those it seemed to be reaching out to. The great part is that I got to finally meet Meno and Ms. Chica and bonus: I met Antonia of Whoopee and her husband Ian and they were a hoot!
Meno, Ms. Chica and I all went to the Chicago Art Institute's Art Museum. We toured around the french impressionists. Oh wow. I just love staring at art. And it was wonderful seeing it with a personal tour guide as Ms. Chica is a learned artist and was able to answer my questions while also providing added interesting information. I saw a Renoir I loved. The study of haystacks by Van Gogh* was gorgeous. But my favorite is still the pointillist painting "A Sunday in the Park on the Island of La Grande Jatte" by Seurat, which incidentally takes up a whole wall - for a piece of art done in all little dots that is an amazing feat. It's fabulous.
We did a lot of walking. I found a used bookstore and scored the following: The Golden Compass, The Princess Bride, A Man Without a Country, The Woman Warrior and Kings of Infinite Space. So watch for reviews on that. After Meno and Ms. Chica left I had Chicago to myself for the rest of the day till my train left at 10 pm. So I went shopping on Michigan Ave - mostly window shopping. I took a ride on a 10 sail ship. Walked all the way around the pier. Was dumb enough not to listen to Meno and Baz Lurhman and consequently got a lovely facial sunburn, and had the original deep dish pizza at Pizzeria Uno. Oh boy that was delicious.
I have been talking my head off all over the place. Having fun conversations with anyone who stands still enough. I finished three books so far: Three Bags Full, Watching Baseball Smarter and Summer Reading. Book reviews to follow later this week. I have pictures coming too- will post probably Wednesday sometime. Check back for pictures of the sail ship especially - it was so cool. Ok, gotta get some sleep. I'm at a lovely B&B in Schenectady where being the only guest tonight conveniently upgraded me to a much larger room at no charge! Hurrah. Talk soon. I miss blogging you guys!
*Post Note Correction: Yeah so I'm a complete idiot. Ok not complete but really. I read my notes wrong. It was not Van Gogh that did the study in haystacks, it was Monet. Duh.

And a wonderful time was had by Maggie. :-)
Pizzeria Uno.... *drool* And the Seurat is truly stunning.
(I touched a Van Gogh once. Don't tell anyone.)
Thanks for letting me live vicariously through you. I do miss Chicago.
I also miss meno. And I'll probably miss you and Ms. Chica after we meet. ;-)
What Nancy said. Thanks for being our eyes and ears on the ground!
Welcome home safe and semi sound?? I'm so jealous of you.. maybe the next one we can all go to?
Sounds like you had a great trip! I do love Chicago. Window shopping there, is the best. How long was the total train ride? I haven't ridden the train in years, but I love the scenery you can take in riding by rail.
I hope you are home by now. And where is your sunscreen miss maggie?
You had pizza? You dog!
What fun we had.
Sigh.
I'm glad you had fun. Good for you!
Sounds like a great time.
I am glad you had fun and that Chica are Meno are as great folks as they seem to be via their blogs.
and we missed you to!
glad to hear you had a good time. I would have loved to met you all.
Did you get the original "Princess Bride" or the revised version with all the politics cut out?
I am still so bummed I never connected with you - next time at the unBlogHer party, I guess.
I can't believe there is a revised Princess Bride?!?
Nancy, for my first visit to the Windy City I am very satisfied. It was beautiful and fun. I missed you and when we eventually meet the missing will be that much more.
Liv, you're quite welcome and thanks for stopping in!
Cheesy, see that's the thing, I think instead of going somewhere with an agenda (which I just didn't jive with in the end), I think it would be way more cool to just all get together for the sole purpose of meeting each other.
Schmoopie, I believe in all I spent about 48 hours on trains. I averaged 24 going and coming. I spent almost more time on trains than staying in Chicago. But it was worth it.
Meno, finally made it home last night at midnight. Whew. It was so much fun and the pizza was delectable - too much rubbing it in?
Mama P, thank you. I really needed it.
D-Man you're back too!
Sanjay, it was really cool meeting them and affirming that they are exactly as I expected. Ok except for the southern accent, that surprised me.
Bob, I wish you could have come too. It was a lot of fun and I was wishing there was a guy blogger we knew around to give us the male point of view on the hormone infested conference.
Tink, I have the abridged version - you stinker.
Qt, I am bummed we didn't run into each other too. If for only that I sort of wish I hadn't chickened out of the first party at the Whiskey Sky bar, but it was so dark and loud and well you know - recluse here. About the Princess Bride, William Goldman claims his in an abridgement of S. Morgenstern's original. I really recommend reading the abridgement. Its quite cleverly put together.
Splendid account. You were lucky to meet those great folks. I hope to join ya'll some day, some way. And, making money off my blog? Comments is spiritual cash, I say. (Don't let my boss know that!)
Wow! Very cool, Maggie and I know you so needed that break for something exciting and new. I wouldn't go for those kind of sessions either, just to meet people, and you can always do that on your own.
I 'm glad you and Meno let me hang out, me being under-aged and all...
Seurat. Oh, I so envy you. And don't tell anyone but Nancy--I once touched a Magritte. *grin*
So, send pics woman! Everyone's been talking about this shin-dig, and I ain't seen a single piece of photographic proof that this whole thing wasn't as faked as the Moon landing!
It makes me want to cry that I missed you and Meno. And I am re-reading The Princess Bride just this week. I can almost quote it verbatim.
It sounds like you had a good time and that is the most important thing about going to something like this. And you may be surprised how much you actually did learn as a lot of learning can happen from talking with others about the same subject.
It was lovely to have breakfast with you! I should have said so sooner, but I got home and had a week off from the Internet. Even though I bunked off Blogher, I felt like I'd had a peak of Internet activity somehow.
The ten-sail ship sounds amazing. We were walking down Michigan Avenue, heard "Yarr!" sounds and saw a streetcar full of cutlass-waving pirates drive past. I loved Chicago.
You're a beautiful flower!
Antonia
nice picture of you at Meno's, but time to update the menu here, Mags!
